my Workshops

April 2022Metaverse Inception V1.0 with Alab Adviento

Metaverse Inception V1.0 focuses on complex procedural asset development generated with 3ds Max and Unreal Engine. In this course, I have learned how to create characters, environments, and structures that may be used for metaspace building, game development, or visualization. The webinar was divided into two major parts– the character and the structure. Both leverage Unreal Engine’s premade assets and Quixel’s Megascans, while being built using 3DSMax and Tyflow. Thank to these steps, I learned procedural modeling techniques, particle simulation for geometry creation, character rigging, texturing, and visualization. Throughout the process we exercised a workflow of creating assets with a variety of tools for automation. The goal is to establish confidence in setting up the designed character and spaces for a multitude of uses in the rising industry of Metaverse’s.

April 2022Continuous Formations V1.0 with Alan Cation

Continuous Formations V1.0 explores generative techniques for creating, trimming, and smoothing closed-cell mesh networks in Grasshopper. The workshop covers methods for modeling with the SubD geometry type in Rhino + Grasshopper and understand its relationship with Mesh and NURBS geometries. Generated mesh networks are computationally trimmed by SubD geometries modeled in Rhino, then relaxed into a continuous minimal surface with smooth edge conditions. After the development of a minimal surface generator, we explored methods for panelizing and creating textures on these forms. Through these methods, we covered techniques for dealing with SubD creases in Grasshopper. Continuous Formations takes a modular approach to constructing Grasshopper tools where I’ve learned methods for making reusable Grasshopper functions using Clusters and Hops. Once a tool-set for generating minimal surface networks is created, we used Blender to generate the renderings.

February 2022Crypto Cities V1.0 with Andrew Kudless

Crypto Cities V1.0 explores generative drawing practices through the last one hundred years. From early conceptual art of the mid-20th century minimalists to today’s generative art movement enabled by NFTs on the blockchain, the use of algorithms to produce drawings is fertile ground for architects and designers. While many popular BIM platforms automate drawings, they do so with an eye towards production, not creativity. This webinar focuses on conceptual drawings made visible through automation. As a demonstration, drawings of fictional cities will be developed and then minted on the blockchain. Using Grasshopper as the primary tool, this webinar will take attendees through the process of creating generative sketches of fictional urban developments. These sketches will be refined through a variety of pre-built groups of components provided during the workshop. The webinar will detail how to use plugins such as Human to automate layer and attribute creation and baking to Rhino. The drawings will be further refined in Illustrator before being minted on an NFT marketplace. Attendees will learn various techniques within Grasshopper related to drawing output and managing complex files as well as how the basics of minting artwork on the blockchain.

September 2021Fractal Macrocosm V1.0 with Chantal Matar

Fractal Macrocosm V1.0 is inspired by the natural fractal occurrences in the world and will investigate generative, iterative, and repetitive structures with Houdini. Participants will learn the basics of Mandelbrot set as the primal form of fractals and implement it into Houdini. The webinar will tackle how to work with general algorithms, looping formulas and generating systems going into infinity. Participants will also be exposed to VEX and system functions inside Houdini, alongside For-Loops, in order to create repeating structures. We will also dive into the SOPs, iteration formulas and subsurface scattering. Alternate fractals generation methods will also be achieved, such as converting the iterative systems into mesh geometry for architectural simulations and displacement systems. We will give varying solid mesh geometry representations to the fractals as well as materials. Finally, we will show how to set up a basic rendering in Houdini’s Mantra render engine, and a further rendering option using Keyshot.

September 2021Residual Digital V1.0 with Daniel Caven

Residual Digital V1.0 will investigate the emergence of digital anomalies created from simple form finding techniques. The course will include a brief intro to Rhino 7 SubD tools and simple grasshopper form finding definitions – the generated forms will be used as the design figure to be distorted and broken up. We will explore many different variations to simple modeling in Rhino and dissecting the models in Grasshopper. The decimated forms will then be populated with different geometries, orientations, and arrangements to exploit dimensional artifacts. Tools that will be explored are component models, block modelling, and parametric sculpting. A semi-reversed process of design will be used to create and build the digital scenarios. Finally, the designs will be brought in Lumion where participants will learn to add scene elements such as sun, grass, trees, weather, and other elements to be beautifully rendered encompassing an overall completed scene with the accumulated digital artifacts. After participation, individuals will be comfortable with some basics to intermediate skills in Grasshopper, Rhino SubD skills, and Lumion basics to be able to create multiple designs and a scene in which they can render their final models in.

September 2021Anexact Aescapes V1.0 with Sovona Ghatak

Anexact Aescapes V1.0 will explore the advanced digital modeling techniques to generate complex architectural compositions. ‘Anexact’ architectural objects resist being reduced to pure geometric forms. Being ambiguous, irreducible, and rigorous, these objects embrace the immense qualities that exist in any form. The multiple techniques and operations can be leveraged in the conceptual stage of any project. The explorations will wrap several frames, and we will be diving deeper into the notion of how newer properties appear when autonomous architectural masses interact with each other. Participants will learn to develop models that speculate on various qualities of articulations and interaction of masses. Rather than using a sketch as an end goal, we would be using it as a starting point and then taking it forward while developing a 3D composition, seeing how far we can go with it using a a series of simple compounded operations in Rhinoceros 3D. The webinar will demonstrate how to take full advantage of manual modeling in Rhinoceros 3D to create complex geometries you might not believe could be manually designed without parametric tools.

September 2021Procedural Assemblies V2.0 with Marvin Bratke

Procedural Assemblies V2.0 aims to develop a scalable, reversible and modular architecture system from a kit of parts primarily with Grasshopper’s Wasp plugin. Innovative design approaches and project visualization with Escape will be investigated to create assembly-based construction systems from discrete voxel logics. Using the research in reconfigurable material solutions and scalable timber construction lead to proposals for innovative spatial strategies for environments and communities of the digital age. We will investigate modular building blocks, advances in low-cost and low-tech pre-fab construction and their representation. Using generative design tools, methods of digital reassembly and the creation of novel building systems and aggregation logics will be explored. The resulting architectural and computational bottom-up strategies for reversible building systems will lay out manufacturing and economic processes to support the system. Computational logics are applied to allow design solutions, built up upon generative and flexible planning parameters. Ultimately, the designs propose a scenario, how we can use our digital toolset and architectural design thinking for establishing new design workflows for providing affordable and socially sustainable spaces.

July 2020Grasshopper Worshop - Twisted Box Jewelry with Michael Pryor

This webinar focuses on fluid interconnected jewelry objects such as rings, bracelets, or necklaces. The jewelry base structure will be comprised of connected morph-able spaces called Twisted Boxes that are flowing along guide curve paths. The aim of the webinar is to create custom cell module units which can connect to each other at a low poly level to then morph into the twisted boxes, subdivide, and smooth together. During the cell creation process, I learned various connection and interweaving strategies as well as how to create topologically identical cell units that can be blended between to create gradient geometry aesthetic

March 2020Morphing Polygonal Geometries with Alejandro Garcia Gadea

The webinar focuses on creating complex geometry driven by low-poly geometry components that respond to their local data environment. I learned advanced modeling workflows combining procedural polygon modeling in Maya and parametric design in Grasshopper to create detailed organic aggregated design systems.
